Mine backfires occasionally on decel but I rarely get a backfire on startup. It will sometimes fart a bit if I crack the throttle when it is cold. I am no jetting expert but you could try adjusting the fuel screw to see if that makes a difference. I know most 450exc have issues with the exhaust sealing at the header to exhaust port joint.. Deceleration Backfire is caused by fuel burning in the exhaust manifold or header. No ifs ands or buts, that’s what causes it. I'm pretty sure it is a valve adjustment issue .....mostly I just want some one else to say that too. It has 2536 miles on it. The last valve adjustment was at 1300 miles, done.

My 09 450 EXC splutters terribly when you back off. It has the akrapovic muffler fitted. I spoke to a KTM service guy and he told me to lift the needle one notch as it is a lean backfire. I have done this , no effect at all. Any help to get it running smoothe would be great. Other than this the bike is fantastic, the pure grunt going up hills.

I have found that almost all of the time any backfire when you get off the gas is due to an air leak. This can be in eather the intake or the exhaust.
